The Effects of Changes in Racial Identity and Self-Esteem on Changes in Black American Adolescents' Mental Health

Ethnic Pride and Self-Esteem

Ethnic pride may be as important as self-esteem to the mental health of young Black American adolescents, according to a new study in the November/December issue of the journal Child Development.

The empirical* study is one of the first to look at the effects of self-esteem and of racial identity and to separately explore their effects by gender. The study specifically measures racial identity in terms of ethnic pride.

*Empirical study is based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic.

The Study

This study assessed the unique effects of racial identity and self-esteem on 259 Black American adolescents’ depressive and anxiety symptoms as they transitioned from the 7th to 8th grades (ages 12-14). Racial identity and self-esteem were strongly correlated with each other for males but not for females.
