Dr. Mae C. Jemison was born in Decatur. Alabama, but considers Chicago, Illinois to be her hometown.
She graduated from Morgan Park High School in Chicago, Illinois, in 1973.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering and Bachelor of Arts degree in African and Afro-American studies from Stanford University in 1977.
Jemison also received a doctorate degree in medicine from Cornell University in 1981.
She speaks Kiswahili, Japanese and Russian.
In her off time, she excels in dance and reads science fiction and spy novels and collects art.
Dr. Jemison From High School to Stanford University
It was a high school field trip to a local university that stimulated her interest in biomedical engineering.
Dr. Mae Carol knew that this interest would require her to study biology, physics and chemistry.
As a high school honor student, she won a National Achievement Scholarship.
This allowed her to attend Stanford University.
Dr. Jemison earned two bachelor’s degrees from Stanford, one in Chemical Engineering and the other in Afro-American Studies in 1977.
Dr. Jemison’s Background Specialties
Dr. Jemison's background includes work in the areas of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, reproductive biology, and printed wiring board materials.
She also developed and participated in research projects on the Hepatitis B vaccine, schistosomiasis and rabies
Dr. Jemison was a General Practitioner and attending graduate engineering classes in Los Angeles when named to the astronaut program in 1987.
